Care Centers

Ophthalmologists at American Vision Eye Hospitals and Clinics are experts in treating all types of vision and eye conditions.  Our hospitals and clinics work with specialists of different subspecialties of ophthalmology. We offer the following specialties of ophthalmology. (*Not all services are available at all locations, so, please confirm when you call to request an appointment.)

General Ophthalmology

With a wide network of highly regarded ophthalmologists, we provide total eye care, from examinations (evaluating visual changes and prescribing glasses) to the diagnosis and treatment of disease through medication and surgery. We also take care of a variety of conditions, such as diabetes, dry eyes, cataracts and glaucoma.

Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgeries are the most commonly performed surgeries at American Vision Eye Care Centers. Our cataract cases are handled with excellent outcomes and low complication rates. In cataract surgery, the cloudy cataract lens is removed and then replaced with an artificial lens implant. There are different types of cataract surgery:

1. Phacoemulsification, or Phaco. A small incision is made on the side of the cornea, the clear, dome-shaped surface that covers the front of the eye. Your doctor inserts a tiny probe into the eye. This device emits ultrasound waves that soften and break up the lens so that it can be removed by suction. Most cataract surgery today is done by phacoemulsification, also called “small incision cataract surgery.”

2. Extracapsular surgery. Your doctor makes a longer incision on the side of the cornea and removes the cloudy core of the lens in one piece. The rest of the lens is removed by suction. Prior to cataract surgery, antibiotic eye drops may be prescribed to prevent infection. Cataract surgery is most often done as an outpatient procedure with local anesthesia (a numbing cream/gel is placed in the eye) and light intravenous sedation. You should not see instruments coming toward your eye and you should not feel pain in your eye during surgery. The incision made to remove the cataract is so small that it usually does not require stitches. Phacoemulsification (a type of ultrasound) is the most common method used to remove the cataract.

After the natural lens has been removed, it often is replaced by an artificial lens, called an intraocular lens (IOL). An IOL is a clear, plastic lens that requires no care and becomes a permanent part of your eye. Light is focused clearly by the IOL onto the retina, improving your vision. You will not feel or see the new lens.

Some people cannot have an IOL. They may have another eye disease or have problems during surgery. For these patients, a soft contact lens, or glasses that provide high magnification, may be suggested.

Cataract SURGICAL IMPLANT OPTIONS

INTRAOCULAR LENS (IOL)

Although all intraocular lenses are used to restore clarity of vision, there are many intraocular lens choices available to patients today.

Standard IOLs are monofocal, meaning they are designed to correct the vision at one focal length. If a patient chooses to have IOLs implanted that correct for distance vision in both eyes, they will most likely need glasses to read. Some patients opt for an IOL that corrects their vision for distance in one eye and an IOL that corrects their vision for near in the other eye.

Premium IOLs  include the presbyopia-correcting IOLs and the toric IOLs. The decision to use these lenses must be made on an individual basis.

Presbyopia-correcting (Multifocal) IOLs  are designed to correct for distance and near vision. The intended goal of these lenses is to decrease the need for glasses.
Toric IOLs are used for those patients with astigmatism. Astigmatism refers to an irregularity in the curvature of the cornea. Toric IOLs are designed to correct distance vision and astigmatism.

Cornea & External Diseases

Our Cornea specialists specializes in diseases of the eye’s external surface and cornea (such as inflammatory, infectious and degenerative diseases of the cornea, conjunctiva and lens). Patients with contact lens-related problems are also recommended to see a cornea specialist.

Cosmetic & Reconstructive Procedures

Our oculofacial plastic surgeons specializes in all aspects of cosmetic and reconstructive eyelid and upper facial surgery. Our surgeons perform the most advanced procedures available, including upper and lower blepharoplasty, double eyelid surgery, ptosis (droopy eyelid) repair. They also perform all types of lacrimal (tear duct) and orbital (eye socket) surgery.

Glasses, Contacts & Optometry

Both optometrists and ophthalmologists can provide regular eye exams and give prescriptions for glasses, contacts or eye exercises. If you are experiencing additional problems to your vision such as eye infections, vision loss, light flashes, eye pain, redness, itching, swelling, and irritation around the eye or eyelid, you may want to consult with an ophthalmologist or seek a referral for a specialist. Ophthalmologists can also provide total eye care including the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases through medication and surgery.

Glasses and Contacts

For those suffering from vision problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia, eyeglasses and/or contacts may be a solution. These help to correct vision by focusing light more appropriately on the retina. We offer a wide range of lenses and contact lenses options. If certain products are not readily available at our locations, we can also order for you from manufacturer.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions in which fluid pressure or intra ocular pressure rises within the eye that lead to damage to the optic nerve, which transports visual information from the eye to the brain. Without treatment, it can lead to vision loss.

Our glaucoma specialists specializes in the diagnosis and the medical and surgical management of primary, secondary and complicated glaucoma in patients of all ages. Our clinics and hospitals offer state-of-the-art glaucoma testing capabilities and technology including visual field testing, retinal nerve fiber layer photography, stereoscopic disc photography and computerized optic disc analysis. Treatment options include topical medications, mitomycin c, laser therapy (argon, Nd:YAG and pulsed-dye), glaucoma filtration surgery, cataract surgery and combined glaucoma/cataract surgery.

Laser Vision Correction (Femto-LASIK)

American Vision Laser Eye Center is the first and the only ophthalmology center in Myanmar to offer Bladeless LASIK (Femto-LASIK) and Keyhole SMILE. Now we have the potential to improve vision beyond that of glasses and contact lens corrections.

Neuro-Ophthalmology

Neuro-Ophthalmologists specialize in caring for patients with vision problems related to the nervous system, such as optic nerve problems, visual field loss, unexplained vision loss, transient vision loss, vision disturbances, double vision, abnormal eye movements, thyroid eye disease, myasthenia gravis, unequal pupil size or eyelid abnormalities.
Our neuro-ophthalmologists provide comprehensive eye and neurological evaluations and treatment for a wide spectrum of conditions, referring to Neurologists when necessary.

Pediatric Ophthalmology

Our Pediatric Ophthalmology specialists offer eye care for children and adolescent eye diseases, including strabismus, retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), congenital cataracts, nearsightedness/farsightedness and genetic eye diseases.

Retina

Retina diseases diagnosis

American Vision‘s retina surgeons has some of the best clinical outcomes in the field.
If your ophthalmologist suspects an abnormality with your retina or choroid (the inside of the back of your eye), he or she may recommend special tests called fluorescein and/or indocyanine green (ICG) angiograms, Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), Eye (ocular) ultrasound, Ultra Wide field Fundus Photography and Angiography.

Uveitis

Our ophthalmologists who specialize in uveitis treatment provides timely treatment of uveitis, a potentially serious condition caused by infection or infection-related immune system disturbances, which left untreated can lead to damaged eyesight or blindness.
Our uveitis experts perform thorough eye evaluations in order to diagnose all types of uveitis and recommend treatment options, which may include eye drops, antibiotics or other medication. The doctor will also work with you to manage possible relapses and minimize any permanent vision damage.
